Good small bar for live music in new york city, preferably the village, tribeca, and scuh?

looking for a place to go for my birthday, i just moved from montreal back to the us, i love live music, no name bands or famous people, good live music is what i'm looking for. it's kinda a date to, but it's my birthday, i don't know the city hardly at all.

i USED to go to CBGB, and that was it. i grew out of that scene adn haven't been in nyc for 4 years so recomend a good bar with good local music live decent prices and good people.

if anyone knows montreal, i'd like a place like brutopia :D

  1. The NYC rock music scene has shifted from the East Village over to Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  Places like Luna Lounge (moved from the LES) and Galapagos are really hot right now.

    There's also a bar in the Lower East Side called Pianos which is great.

    Friends have also played shows at the bowery poetry club (east village) and the knitting factory (tribeca) whch are pretty good spots.
