Good strategies for Literati?

I mainly need strategies for the following situations:

Working around bad tiles

What to do if I'm losing a lot

What to do if I can't use big plays thus leaving it open for my opponent.

I absolutely love Literati.  I seem to lose most to the big winners by not knowing a lot of the two and three letter words, that are not used in our daily vocabulary.  I try to go for the big words.  Notice if you play someone who just uses two and three letter words, they will whip your a__ every time.  I guess because when you use big words, you give them more oppportunities to build off of your words.
