This question is only for people who live in New Zealand or have lived in New Zealand. I would like to know the names of good suburbs that are good to live in for Hamilton city? Good as in, friendly people, good schools in the area, nice shopping malls in the area, and good parks.

  1. The only real suburban shopping mall is Chartwell Square. There is also a strip mall called 'The Base' located in Te Rapa. But most of the shopping is done in the central city.

Hillcrest is also quite good. The university is based there. It has two high schools Hillcrest High and St Pauls, both do well academically. Lots of trees.

Also the area around Lake Rotorua (Hamilton Lake) is quite nice. And very close to the city centre.

Also Flagstaff is quite new suburb so is a bit cheaper, but still quite a good.

Further out (about 10km) Matangi and Tamahere are a bit more rural and relaxed. But still quite close to Hamilton. Although they only have primary schools.

  2. If you're particular about your suburb and proximity to good schools etc., the newer suburbs will be your best bet. Try Rototuna, Somerset Heights, Horsham Downs, St. James Park, Huntingdon and Flagstaff. These are all situated in very nice areas but the rents are astronomical.

Another very nice suburb is Chartwell, with the new shopping complex that is one of the biggest and best, in the city.
