Question:

Good time to Buy a Small Car??

I've been contemplating buying a car recently given the economy, the price of gas, and that car sales are at a 10-year-low. The thing is I'd be interested in getting a Small Car such as a Honda Fit, Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. The only problem is these are the only cars that have been selling welll recently. It seems to me that some dealerships are moving so few other cars (SUVS, Pickups!) that it would still be possible to get a good deal. I mean they want to be selling anything they can... right? I have a stable job in Video Games and my credit is good. So given that wouldn't dealerships jump at the chance to sell me a car?

What should I do to insure the best deal on a car right now? How should I approach dealerships and what should I say to get the best deal? Is now the best time to even buy a new car? Could sales get even worse? Any advice would be very much appreciated!

  1. How badly a dealer is willing to sell a car can depend on how many he has in stock. Simple economics dictates supply & demand on one item usually means a high price on it. If you want a truck or suv, offer invoice anytime on it + take the rebate on it. The smaller cars like the Fit are not leaving the lot no less than MSRP. There are a few more Civics out there than there are Fit's. I haven't look at the Corolla but I imagine demand for them is high too. Sales on trucks and suv's are likely to get worse if the price of fuel continues to rise. When that happens, economy car sales are to climb. If you want a killer deal, find that suv you've always wanted that was recently traded in to a dealer & make them an offer. Make it ridiculously low. Tell them take it or let it collect dust. Because that is likely to happen for a long time. The best time of the month to buy a new car is at the end of the month when quotas are low & they need to move inventory. To get the best deal is all about research. You gotta get on the internet and find out what invoice is on the car you narrow down to get. Plus find out as much about your trades worth at KBB.com. Now get busy & good luck.
