  1. Let's see- first, YES, your freshman year at college has a HUGE emphasis on your overall achievement- it DOES count.

MANY freshman fall under the trap of no passing all their classes and therefore NOT graduating within 4 years. Why? Too much partying, and not taking it serious enough.

College is MUCH tougher than high school. If you're lazy, it'll catch up with you. Professors can be kind, but they don't deal with lame excuses like high school teachers have to (I KNOW- I'm a high school teacher).

My BEST advice for doing well is to set up a study schedule and stick to it. DO NOT wait until the last minute. Have time to yourself- get plenty of exercise and SLEEP. If you don't get sleep, you won't do well. Make sure you get your homework done in the early evening instead of at night. That's a hard habit to break.

HAVE FAITH in yourself- know you can do it. Don't be afraid to switch majors if the one you're in doesn't feel right.

ALWAYS meet with a counselor- at least once a semester- to track your progress towards graduation. Don't just take random classes- take a specific or recommended regimen of classes that will get you to graduation. If you have time left over, try a dance, PE, or any other class of INTEREST to you.

  2. You have probably already heard this but JOIN CLUBS. Don't worry about overloading. Get involved as much as possible. Then you can drop the stuff that you don't like. This will also help you make friends. Join CKI if you have one on your campus :). If you have chosen a major, especially get involved in departmental things.

Go to as many guest lecturers and performances as you can stand.

Do homework every day. Even a little on Saturday and Sunday, if just an hour. This will keep you in the habit.

Do the reading for classes at least at first. Always read articles you are assigned. Skim chapters after you know which classes you don't need to read in depth for.

Visit your professors in office hours. Even if you have a vague question that you have answered. You can go in and check with them and they will usually strike up conversation. It is always good to make friends with your professors.

Find out about research opportunities and summer internships for your sophomore year.

Utilize the library staff and writing center for editing papers and doing research.

  3. Hmm...try not to get on anyone's bad side because you'll have to go to the same school with them for the next 4 years. Just don't badmouth anyone and you'll be fine social wise. Classes are going to be slightly more difficult than from what you're used to. I would say try to study every now and then, especially when there's a test coming up. Try your best in all classes so you can get into AP/Honor classes next time. Also, I know it seems like you're being a teacher's pet but try to get along with your teacher as much as possible. No matter how much of a jerk they are. I found that teachers tend to be more biased and strict in highschool and they will pick on you a lot in class if they don't like you. Last but not least, definitely don't give in to peer pressure. Highschool is the time when everyone starts drinking and doing drugs etc. Don't follow the crowd.

  4. dont die

  5. make a lot of friends.. be friendly talk to everyone.. go out a lot, party.. always dress to impress and look your best.. your freshman year is the year that your making a first impression, always keep that in mind.. make the best out of it.. its suppose to be the best year in high school (other than senior)
