Question:

Good way to get into social work?

I currently have clerical experience mostly but I just got a job as a youth worker in a youth shelter. Eventually I'd like to move my way up and work in a social services related field or for a non-profit organization. Is this entry level position a good way to start out? I'm 28 and have a B.S. in history and English. Thanks!

  1. I think that it is a great way to get your foot in the door in a social services type of job. Also, the fact that you have a degree in anything helps as well. Some agencies only require that you have a college degree of some sort and not exactly one in social work to do case management.

    Congratulations!

  2. That sounds like an excellent way to get experience in the human services field, and how awesome that you are mentoring young people!  With a bachelor's degree, one may apply for a master's degree in social work (MSW).  And just an fyi that Not all social work programs require the person to have taken the GRE (graduate record examination) test.

For general career info:  http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'social workers' or such.

  3. Social work is a very rewarding field, but they are putting into place license regulations that are going to require social workers to have their MSW and a license.  Stick with the job you have now for experience and look into getting your MSW.

  4. Yes, an entry-level position is a good way to start out, but you will need to look into taking university-level classes that would give you the knowledge and experience needed for anything beyond what you are currently doing. Look into classes, even certificates, that are offered at nearby universities regarding education, psychology, working with children, sociology, etc.
