Go to your local library and check out some books on body language - the body often has subtle hints that can cue you into what a person is feeling when you talk to them.

Also, practice is key.  If you're too nervous talking with someone IRL, try talking to people online until you are more comfortable communicating.  Common interests is a great way to start.
