I'm looking for good sites to either teach, or buy teaching materals from, to teach my child story comprehension skills, and other reading skills.

  1. I'm sorry I don't know of any websites.

Just read to/with them and ask questions.  It's really the best way.

Ask about what is happening in the story, what has happened and ask them to speculate on what might happen.  Start with familiar stories and introduce unfamiliar ones.  Do it casually, just slip it in while you (or they) are reading.

"Where did that come from again?"

    "Erm, who's that, I've forgotten?"

    "Why's she doing that?"

"Oh no!  What's going to happen next do you think?"

    etc.

Start off helping them/modelling answers, to help build their confidence.

(How old is your child?  I'm aiming this at early reading skills, sorry if you are looking at an older child.  in which case, past test papers is the best practice.)

Talk to their teacher, they may have materials you can use at home.

  2. You can find great and mostly free resources on http://A2Zhomeschool.com under the "Explorations 4 Kids" link on the left side of the home page.

Good luck finding what you need!

  3. The best way to teach these is to read a chapter, or a few chapters to the child, and have them tell you that part of the story back in their own words the next day before you continue the story.

This teaches them listening skills, and by having to tell the story back to you, you can see that they understood it, and it's meaning.

If you like you can always ask a few questions, but often that is no longer needed when using this type of narration.

This is often used in the Charlotte Mason method, and is very effective.

  4. Try the following websites, good luck

  5. I found this site very good for my 7 year old son:

    http://www.sparkisland.com/index.php

It has plenty of supportive material available online or from WH Smith (the reading comprehension one was very good indeed).  You can sign up for a short free trial and then costs around £45 a year.

  6. try todayonline.com.sg

    reading news is the best.
