  1. Northern Maine has some great white water rafting.  The Penobscot River, just north of Millinocket is a good trip.  You can check out the New England Outdoor Center's site at www.neoc.com

  2. First of all, do you know how to kayak?  (I'm thinking "no" since you don't know where to go).  If not, I would recommend finding a good outfitter in your area that will allow you to paddle an inflatable kayak.  They are easier to learn - you don't have to learn how to roll, as you would with a hard shell.  Most commercial outfitters run multi day trips of varying levels, and many are permitted trips (a gov. permit is required so they are not overrun with tourists).  You can also ride as a passenger on a raft in swifter whitewater, but I think it's more fun to do an IK.  My favorite is the Rogue in Oregon.  Challenging but not too bad, and there are several good outfitters who will give you an IK.  By the way, the San Juan is mostly flatwater, not very exciting if that's what you want.

  3. Snake River Whitewater Rafting

    It's awesome!!

    check it out

  4. I went for a week on the San Juan River in Utah.  It empties into Lake Powell, and along the way there are rapids, a portage, indian ruins, canyons, crystal clear pools and excellent camping.

The only people we saw during the week was as we floated past Mexican Hat.
