  1. I took a look at a website for pests specific to Gooseberry: http://www.ars-grin.gov/cor/ribes/ribsym... , and there's nothing that matches the description of your insects.

There is, however, another possible explanation.  Your gooseberries might be in an early infection of a fungal, bacterial, or viral disease (the brown spots), and these areas are oozing fluids which are attracting insects.  And you have baby mantises (http://pics.livejournal.com/medianet/pic... ) who are taking advantage of the insects attracted to the juice.

  2. Below is a good help guide for those growing Ribes species. You should be able to carefully walk threw this to find the problem and solution. Pay particular attention to the insects towards the end but also look carefully as you may have Anthracnose (disease organism) actually affecting the fruit. If you have any money tied up in these plants then get a sample to your local county agricultural extension agent. You can locate them threw your town hall. They love to meet people and help sort out your problems. That's what they are paid to do, that's what they love, and they are great with your local issues. If you can get me a better photo I could help a whole lot more, but without a pic, it's all just a guess. Send an email.
