Goran Tosic prevails over Michal Konecny in the first round – Brasov Challenger 2012
Ranked 481st in the world, Goran Tosic of Montenegro battled past the world number 319 from Czech Republic, Michal Konecny, in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the opening round of the Brasov Challenger in Romania on Wednesday.
Tosic took two hours and 45 minutes to claim win in a close contest and reached the round of 16.
Konecny drew the first blood, nailing a breakthrough in the second game and winning his next serve to take a 3-0 lead. The Czech player struck again in the fourth but he could not consolidate on it, losing the following two games
to see his lead reduced to 4-2. However, the one break of serve that Konecny still had was enough for him, as he made the most of it to triumph 6-3.
The Czech contender banged in two aces and made the same number of double faults in the first set, keeping his first serve percentage at 74 and securing 17 of the 25 points on them. The 22-year-old did not fare very well on the
second deliveries and first returns, losing five of the nine and 14 of the 20 points on them respectively.
Tosic replied in almost the same way, as he grabbed first five games of the second set to race to a 5-0 lead. Konecny broke the bagel by holding his serve in the sixth but he failed to strike back, losing it 1-6.
The Montenegrin player served superbly, as he hit one ace and 70 percent of the first serves, converting 10 of the 14 of them into points. The right-hander was error free on his second deliveries, winning all the six on them. Tosic
did not come across any break threat and utilised two of the five of his own opportunities in the second set.
The lower ranked player between these two, Tosic, struck in the very first game of the decider but Konecny bounced back immediately to level the score at 1-1. They exchanged one more break of serve in the following eight, taking
the score to 5-5. Tosic succeeded in claiming the decisive breakthrough in the 11th and capitalised on it this time to win 7-5.
The Montenegrin is drawn to meet Michal Przysiezny of Poland in the second round. The Polish player fought back from a deficit of one set to stun the sixth seed, Arnau Brugues-Davi 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the opener.
