Gordon Beckham leaves his mental struggles aside; aims at competing
Gordon Beckham is one of the shinning beacons of the Chicago White Sox and even though his 2011 season proved to be a disaster for the club, he plans to strike back hard in the coming months as the team brings on a new hitting coach in the form of Jeff Manto.
Beckham is used to developing his play in the latter half of the regular season but he is also prone to starting weak on the plate. He talked to the press on Wednesday, November 2, about his problems and his aim.
The 2008 First Year Player Draft debuted in 2009 with the bat and started off weak. But after a good second half season he ended his tenure with a .270 batting average. He drove in 63 runs and hit 14 homers. In 2010, he had a similar season but it was relatively
weak. In 2011, he plunged to a .230 batting average.
Now the rising star is hoping to build on his positivity in the coming months as the offseason period looms over. Beckham’s woes resonate with those of Adam Dunn and Alex Rios. The change in management and coaching will surely bring out the desired effect
in 2012.
"Hopefully, it's the worst statistical year I have in the big leagues, but it's not even about that," Beckham said. "There are always a lot of expectations, but I have to learn to take it in stride and next year try to be better than I was."
Beckham explained on what he has to do to back on top, next season.
"I've just got to be better [next] year and not let the bad affect the next day or two days later or that kind of stuff," Beckham said. "It has to be every day, just a will to succeed, and that's what I've got to remind myself that I know it's still in there."
He also told the press that he plans to head into next year with the aim of competing. If he builds on this objective of his, as he has done in the past, he believes he can have success coming his way.
