Gordon McKie quits Scotland Rugby Union under mysterious conditions - Rugby News
The Chief Executive of the Scotland Rugby Union, Gordon McKie, stepped down from his duties on Tuesday, June 14. According to reliable sources, McKie made the announcement of his resignation from his office because of unknown reasons. McKie was in Italy
to discuss the future line of action for the upcoming Junior World Championship, when he broke the news of his retirement.
McKie’s announcement of his departure has come out at an interesting stage. He was given the vote of confidence by Scotland Rugby Union just a week before his retirement. There is also another interesting aspect of the story that England has made similar
decision of sacking Rugby Football Union Chief Executive, John Steel last weekend. The matter of John Steel is still under investigation and another dilemma has taken place with less than three months to go in the Rugby World Cup 2011.
Gordon McKie took the charge of his present office in 2005 and provided valuable services for the board. McKie, who is a well known accountant, was able to reduce the unnecessary expenditures of the board during his tenure. With his dedication and untiring
efforts he brought down the increasing over drafts of SRU from £20m to about £15m in a short time.
Confirming the news of his retirement, McKie said that he has no regret over his decision. He added that, “I will look back on my time at Murrayfield with a real sense of pride as much has been achieved since the dark days of 2005. I very much appreciated
the board's recent unanimous vote of confidence in the executive management team and I take this opportunity to thank them for their continued support.”
The former skipper of Scotland, Ian McLauchlan, paid rich tribute to McKie and said he remained exemplary in tenure. He stated that, “Gordon McKie has done a good job for Scottish Rugby and it is never a happy situation when anyone loses their job but I’m
afraid this is probably the right thing for the game at this time.”
However, the issue is uncertain and it is not clear whether Gordon McKie has been sacked or he quit on his own.
