Gordon Mckie: Scotland keen to sign long-term coaching deal with Robinson
The Scottish Rugby union has decided to offer a new long-term deal to the current head coach of the national team, Andy Robinson.
Robinson, who has also coached the British and Irish Lions in the past, has been coaching the Scotland senior team since 2009. He was previously coaching the Scotland A team but later the Scottish Rugby Union moved him towards the national team.
Although the Scots aren't considered as strong a team as the All Blacks, Springboks or Wallabies, Scotland has performed amazingly well under his coaching.
They performed really well in the recently concluded Autumn Internationals, where they won 2 out of the 3 matches they played. They beat Samoa and followed that victory by beating the world number 2, Springboks in the last match of the season. Their only
defeat came against the world number one, All Blacks.
Robinson was also coaching the Scottish team when Scotland got their most famous victory, in the history of Scottish Rugby Union, against the Wallabies last year.
Chairman of the Scottish Rugby Union, Gordon Mckie, also confirmed the news while talking to the ‘Six Nations site’ last night and said the Union wants to extend his contract for a longer period. His current contract will be expire by the end of next year’s
world cup.
Gordon Mckie, who was also happy with Scotland’s recent victories, admitted that the team had really improved under Robinson and that Scotland Rugby Union was really keen to take his services for a longer period of time. He revealed that although other unions
also had their eye on Robinson, he was hopeful that Robinson would accept SRU's new contract offer, which is going to be presented to him in a few days time.
Mckie said, "There is speculation about Andy Robinson's future every single day. He is our man until 2012, but with things going the way they are we will have to sit down and have a conversation about what we do sooner than the expiry of his contract. Andy
will have his own views but I'm sure we will sit down and have a conversation about what makes sense and when."
There is no doubt that Scotland has improved remarkably well under Robinson’s coaching and they have shown to the Southern Hampshire teams that they won't be an easy team for them in the upcoming world cup. Scotland still have 10 months to work with Robinson
and one wouldn't be surprised if they come up as the most emerging team in the world cup.
