Gordon Strachan resigns as Middlesbrough boss
Gordon Strachan has resigned as manager of Middlesbrough, it was revealed on Monday, 18 October.
The former Celtic manager had been in the job for less than a year and, despite the North East side being touted as favourites for the Football League Championship title before the start of the season,
they are languishing in 20th place, 16 points behind leaders Queens Park Rangers and just two ahead of Leicester in the relegation zone.
A 2-1 defeat at the Riverside Stadium against Leeds United left Boro in their worst league position for 20 years, and that prompted Strachan to hand in his resignation.
'Tore up his contract'
The club’s chairman Steve Gibson told the BBC that: "He offered his resignation but not only that — in doing so he tore up his contract. He sought no compensation and walked away from the club with empty
hands and it's a measure of the man he would be the first to admit that things haven't turned out as we'd have hoped.
"We've had some long, hard very honest discussions in the last month, and today Gordon met with me, we had a long discussion and during that debate he offered his resignation, and I accepted it.
'Strachan's a man of massive integrity'
Gibson also took the opportunity to tell of his respect for Strachan.
“He's a man of massive integrity, very hard-working, cared deeply for this football club. We asked him to do a huge job, I know he gave his best and sometimes circumstances happen where it just doesn't
work. I like him enormously, but it hasn't worked and we had to face up to it," he said.
Strachan took over as Boro manager in October last year after Gareth Southgate was sacked. He went on to win just 13 of his 46 games while he was in charge. Strachan's assistant Steve Agnew has been appointed
as caretaker manager until the club name a paremanent replacement for Strachan.
