Gorillas will be extinct in 10-12 years?

"In the last 10 years, Ebola is the single largest killer of apes. Poaching is a close second," said Peter Walsh, a member if IUCN's Primate Specialist Group, told the AP. "Ebola is knocking down populations to a level where they won't bounce back. The rate of decline is dizzying. If it continues, we'll lose them in 10-12 years."

But that's what environmentalists have said about life on earth itself, so...if they're right, the apes will live as long as the rest of us.

  1. i think it's interesting that most of us care that gorillas will soon be extinct, but very few of us care enough to do anything about it

  2. Yes, well maybe. Let me ask you this. What role do gorillas play in your everyday life? Will they ever be of importance to you? Have you even seen an ape in person?

  3. That is not the right attitude to take about a species that has no voice. We have a voice and we can express our concerns and discomfort. We have the ability to adapt to our surroundings or make them adapt to our needs. A mountain Gorilla is at the mercy of all of us. If you develop this attitude that all species are under threat and we don't need to do anything because its inevitable, then you are just being a part of the problem, not the solution.

  4. Are gorillas the next hot button species for the animal wacko crowd?     I thought after harpooning incident of a day or two ago, it would be the Grey Whales.

  5. who give a ****

  6. Actually, environmentalists are saying that we've got less than ten years before global warming is completely irreversible.  We'll survive it as a species, along with a bunch of other species, but it won't be pleasant.  Mass poverty, starvation, and war could very well be what happens.  I mean, the Dust Bowl situation was bad enough, and that wasn't nearly as widespread as global warming is.

It will be a tragedy if we lose the gorilla.  The only species more closely related to us is the chimpanzee.  We're losing our cousins here.  It's a tragedy whenever humanity causes the extinction of any species, but this one hurts me more than others.
