Gossamer Seed celebrates the season start by winning the Canford Cliffs European Breeders Fund Athasi Stakes (Fillies & Mares) at Curragh
Under training John Joseph Murphy, Gossamer Seed, won after a very long and unfortunate spell of missing races. Choisir’s four-year-old roan filly out of mare, Light And Airy, claimed the Group 3 Canford Cliffs European Breeders Fund Athasi Stakes (Fillies
& Mares) on 7th May at Curragh over seven furlongs.
She shot into the new season by leading the 5/4 favourite of the race, Bulbul, by 4 ¾ lengths. During the initial furlongs, Gossamer Seed tracked the leaders and was racing third by the time half of the track distance was under way. The remainder of the
race saw her killing the furlongs one after the other and finally leading the concluding furlong.
She was ridden by Shane Foley.
The winner was soon followed by the 5/4 favourite of the race, Bulbul. A. P. O’Brien’s entry for the race, Ishvana, settled third behind the winner.
It was after losing six races one after the other that she finally managed posting a win through the seasonal debut.
She was the eldest contender on the track.
Murphy's son, George, said: "This filly will probably go for another stakes race in a month and then she'll likely get a break.
"We'll try to make the most of any opportunities for her on soft ground."
The last time that she won was in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Fillies Handicap on 28th June at Sligo over six and a half furlong. Riding with B. A. Curtis, the four-year-old led the runner up of the race, Allegra Tak, by six
lengths.
Settling third was Kateeva.
Winning after such a long time has ignited the inspiration in the connections for taking their chances with the filly in near future and that too in graded stakes. Following the possible graded stake, the filly will be sent for resting.
Such an enthusiastic break into the new season leaves little doubt in her potential to overcome the challenges in the future races that get penciled out for her.
The connections will need to put in extra effort by recognising the gaps and deficiencies due to which the filly remained deprived of victory for so long. They will have to look into the ground condition that suits her and the track distance that she finds
easy and then only pick a wise race for Gossamer Seed.
