Got 3 fish yesterday, all of them died today?

Yesterday I went out and got 3 fish. 2 goldfish and a shabunkin. I'd already had the tank ready and the filter had been running for 3 days. This morning I woke up and 2 of them were dead, so I took them out. Then a couple of hours later the other had died. The water looks really murky and I don't have a clue what has caused this??? Please help, I feel like asking for my money back! x

  1. First of all it sounds like you filter is not cleaning the water good enough.Check that out first.

Second when you bring home the fish in a bag you must put the bag with the fish in it into the tank so they can get used to the temp. of your water for about one hour.Putting them directly into the tank is a shock to their body's and can kill them.

Good luck next time (clean up that water) Hope this helps you!

  2. New tank syndrome. Sounds  like the tank was begining to cycle and most likely culprit was it was not properly established enough to sustain your fish.

You don't describe the 'murky' aspect, but it sounds much like what this person went through in the link below.  I'm suprised the pet store didn't inquire as to your setup so they could instruct you on what steps you needed to take for your fish.

  3. Sounds like you did not cycle your tank completely before you added fish. You need to check your ammonia, nitrate, and ph levels in the tank and do a tank cleaning. Be sure you cylce the tank before adding any new fish. Sorry for your loss.

  4. Hi, sorry to hear you lost your fish-this is because you added too many too quick & because there is no established eco system in your tank to eat the toxins they all died by suffocating on their own waste.

Typically each Goldfish needs at least 10 gallons PER FISH in a tank with a fitted lid, a filter designed to run a tank twice the size & a master test kit to monitor your water quality. A tank with fish will take from 6 to 8 weeks before a healthy colony of good bugs has grown in the filter & gravel, only then is it safe to add more fish & then you still need to always observe the one fish per 10 gallon rule. Have a read through the links below-they explain in detail about what the cycle actually is & how to set up & maintain a healthy Goldfish tank.

The cycling process is fundamental to healthy fish & although it's a rather difficult concept to grasp at first you will have no success without a basic understanding & this [albeit good intentioned] lack of knowledge together with indifferent or downright untrue advice from many pet store employees ensures the poor Goldfish will continue to suffer for our ignorance.

  5. Did you read the directions on the tank? Some tanks have to be running for 3-5 days before they are suitable for fish.

Did you add water straight from the tap? If so you need to get a dechlorinator. AquaSafe is highly! recommended for fresh water fish! Tap water has harsh chemicals in the water that are bad for fish.

I would clean your your entire tank, 100% water change, rinse the gravel in hot water in a strainer, and soap the tank and decorationsm rinse both with  hot water.

Try the tank off and add your water, again if it's straight from the Tap, use your AquaSafe. It'll give you very clear directions on the back!

Let your tank sit for a week, if the water is fine and the filter is working. Add ONE gold fish, if he lives for a month, add another fish.

Hope that helps, good luck sweety.

  6. The reason that your fish died is ammonia toxicity. The ammonia in your tank is also what is causing the water to look murky.

Next time before you get fish, you need to "cycle" your tank. Essentially this means that you need to put ammonia in there yourself (with no fish), and wait for nitrifying bacteria to colonize.

You can read more about cycling here:

    Good luck!

  7. when we first bought our fish, 5 of them died within 3 days. sad. then we bought 2 sharkfish, one died within 2 days, the other one within 2 weeks.

Then we bought 2 moor fish and one algea eating fish. one died half a year later b/c our air filter broke, but it would still live, just as the other two ones. AND THEY'RE HEALTHY!!

THE BEST SOLUTION is to buy moor fish and at least one algea eating fish. they're begginner fish, require low managebility, eat well, etc. they won't die soon.

Make sure your tank is cleaned at least once a week or when needed. always use the air rock filter thingy because your fish will die without it.

good luck! And moor fish look soooo cutee and they're black isnt this cool??

  8. your tank is still in its cycle. check ph/amonia,nitrite levels using a test kit and pump loads of oxygen in the water using an air pump/stone.

when buying fish study them closely....

they should be active and should have no signs of disease. the fins should be full not torn or fraid and the eyes should be clear.

moving fish from one tank to annother stresses them so a healthy fish will cope much better than a sick fish when moved.

in this case it is prob water quality so check this before adding any other fish.

  9. did you cycle the tank

was the tank atleast 70 gallons

if not thats why they died

  10. It definitely has to do with water chemistry. Your fish tank needs a lot of time to start it's cycling process and develop a good stable cycle of many substances in it. 3 days isn't enough.

The water might be murky because you've rushed things and it might've caused a large bloom in some sort of bacteria. I'm not sure
