  1. What do you consider a long bike trip?  I ride a 100 miler a week.  Do you mean that long - or - longer?

The best tip you can receive is to be in shape for the length and conditions of the ride.  For the first 200 mile ride of the season (back in May) I rode a total of 700 training miles -- starting with 25 milers and eventually doing a "practice 100" before the event.  Hydrating and nutrition are of equal importance, but if your body isn't up to the task, you won't make it.

  2. That really depends on what you consider to be a long distance bicycle trip, how well you feel your bicycle could handle the trip, and what route you desire to travel.
