Got a big can of sesame oil but it does not have any expiration date?

It says cooking oil. It also says it was packed September 2007. So it has been a year. But there's no expiration date. I got it at an asian store. When I asked the person at the cashiers he said it's all good and i can still use it for a long time. But I wonder if he said that just so that he sells it? Do you think it's good to use, or should I return it?

My 2nd part of the question.. are you aware of sesame oil also being useful for body massage purposes? And is that a different kind of sesame oil, or the cooking oil itself?

Thanks guys.

  1. You'll know when it's gone bad because the smell will make your head snap back. The massage oil usually has a fragrance in it, but you could use it for that purpose.

  2. You can smell the oil to see if it's good.  Rancid oil has a distinctive odor.  If it is still good, you should store it in the fridge to help it keep longer.

I'm not sure about using it for body massage.  When I buy it, it's usually about three dollars for four ounces, so it's too expensive to use for anything except as a flavoring.
