  1. I agree with madrider.  Research your options for bikes...$1500 can get you a good entry level road bike.

Ask yourself what features you want and don't want.  Go to your local bike store and try out some bikes.  If your going to spend some money on a bike a good bike store will let you go out for a ride (pick a route with some hills so you could check the gears).  If you found something you really like but out of budget range, go check ebay or craiglist or kijijii.  Sometimes a great deal comes by that you can't pass up.

  2. That budget should get you a reasonable bike, as above go to local bike and test ride a few.

  3. $1,500 is a nice budget.

What are you looking for though?  There A LOT of options.

you can get a lot of bike in regards to a hard tail or less bike, but full suspension.

This 6500 is a nice bike for under a grand

The 6700 is a little more bike

...in full suspension... this Fuel 5.5 EX is the way to go...

It is plenty of bike for most people.  I am not toally in love with the Tora up front, but it will do!  130MM is plenty of travel for most terrain.  You also will have some room for upgrades without having to overhaul.

Don't only look at Trek though.  There are plenty of bikes out there to ride before buying.  Go to plenty of shops and ask to test ride them.  Do not rush and get to know the feel of the bike.  Personally, i will be back on the market for a bike (currently ride an upgraded 6500 - a very upgraded 6500!) and will be looking for a full squish and the Fuel EX 8 WSD and Specialized Epic Comp

  4. Don't limit yourself to Trek. Instead, visit several bike shops and choose the best bike for you without regard to brand. Bikes are VERY competitive at this price range and provide some pretty startling differences.

You are going to be near the "middle range" for most aluminum framed bikes, near the middle for most steel framed, and near the lower end for most carbon fiber. I would prefer a midrange steel bike over a lower end carbon OR a midlevel aluminum bike.

I have a hard time with Trek because of their long top tube (among other things) and they (and Specialized and Cannondale) tend to have one grade LOWER of components than other brands at the same price.

You'll also need to decide how you want to ride... is the bike going to be for "charity rides", or for racing, or for loaded touring, or something else? Bikes are carefully designed to provide optimal performance in specific conditions.

Take your time. Shop around. Ask questions. Choose your top 3 contendors and test ride them then choose your favorite.

  5. You can get a very decent Trek for $1500 bucks. Do your homework on the bike though. You could come up with a real nice road bike for that price if you look and do it right.
