Got a gift from Iraq, is it common?

So I have friend who is deployed. He sent me a very special present that I got today and I want to know if this is something that is commonly done. He bought a flag for me and had it flown on top of the security station roof on July 4th in my honor. To me this is a very big deal, he made me a certificate of appreciation for all my support for him and his company, he is a 1SG, and also wrote up an official looking letter, both of which I framed. He sent me pics showing him raising the flag. I just wanted to know if this is something common or easily done for someone special back at home? Thanks for your help.

  1. hey we never ask for anyone to go out of their way for us, or do anything special for us, and when people like you do, we have no problem doing all we can do to show how thankful we are.  During my deployment in Iraq a lady sent everyone in my company (about 150 men) an ipod shuffle or a portable dvd player.  So in thanks we had an Iraq flag embroidered to say thanks in arabic and english and we all signed it.  It was very nice, but barely not anywhere near the cost of the womans support towards us.

  2. It is something that is done in various places. You buy a flag, the money usually goes to a fallen soldier fund for different units, and they will fly the flag on any day, or a date you choose, and give you a certificate saying that it was flown over where ever on such and such a date. I got a few for family when I was deployed.

  3. I think he has alot of respect for you. It is very special. For someone to go through all of that for you, he must think allot of you.

  4. well my uncle did the same thing with his girlfriend.

  5. you should feel very honored. it can be done by anyone but there is a list. the fact that he took the time to go through all of the steps shows its importance to him.

please take care of it and store it properly(no red showing when it is folded).

  6. I don't think it is common. I think it's wonderful for you. You have the respect of him and his company.

My daughters crew gave me a framed certificate when I went to visit her ship in Spain. I am always sending her and them stuff from home. And at xmas I make it as special as I can for all of them. Even the CO was involved in the presentation. I was so embarrassed for just trying help in any way I could.

But I also felt very good.

God bless all our military, may he keep you safe

  7. Well you have become a Very Special Lady to the

    1stSgt and his Troops...

Your thoughtfulness and caring enough to support

his Unit with Care Packages etc...

Has made a very lasting impression on the Unit...

Sending you a Flag that has flown over their

Positions is about as "High An Honor" as they

    can bestow upon you.

In answer to your question...No, it is not an every day occurrence...It is reserved for "Special People" like you...

I would like to add my "Thanks For Caring" to you also...
