  1. I take it you are in the UK and that the number you have is

    +1 *** *** ****, so to dial it it is 001 *** *** ****.

    That should sort your problem.

  2. The + sign is not used when dialing phone numbers.

If you see a phone number listed with a + sign, it means that optional numbers "may" be required to dial that number.

The + sign typically implies that you "may" need to enter the IDD (International Direct Dial) code, first, before dialing the rest of the number.

For example, if you live in USA and dial a long distance number (to within USA/Canada), it is usually of the format: 1-x*x-x*x-xxxx.  1 is the country code for USA/Canada dialing.

But, if you are dialing "outside" of North America, then you may see a number listed as

    +(country code)(area code)(local number)

When dialing another country outside North America, replace the + sign with 011, which is the IDD for dialing International from USA/Canada.

  3. + means international exit code of your country. US/Canada's exit code is 011 and most of the European and Asian countries' exit code is 00.
