Question:

Got any advice on buying speakers for my husband for Father's Day?

I need speakers that will attach directly to my TV or DVD player, as the TV's speaker's are Terrible. The TV is newer and won't connect to speakers that just have bare wires.

I need something inexpensive, as we are dirt poor college students with three kids. I live in Idaho and don't have much beyond Wal-mart around here, so I would prefer something I can get online.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

  1. Yeah, speakers need amplification to work, and a TV or a DVD player won't do the trick, unless the speakers are powered.  I'd just go to walmart and buy a cheap $100 surround sound in a box system.

  2. Hit your local CraigsList and find someone selling an older Yamaha, Denon, Sony ES receiver and speakers.

Or look into one of the Logitech 5.1 computer speakers. These are self-powered speakers, but make sure they take a Optical or Coaxial-digital input.

I have put a link to a decent one on Amazon. They sell used as well, and dont forget to check out your local Craigslist.

  3. You can't just buy speakers and attach them directly to a tv or dvd player, without any amplification you would get sound so low it will barely be as loud as a whisper. Your best bet if you want to go cheap is buy a decent set of Logitech computer speakers and buy an adapter to connect the headphone plug type connector of the pc speakers to a tv/dvd player.
