Question:

Got any good advice on how to deal with lower leg edema?

My 98 yr old mom has lower leg edema from lack of exercise and sitting on the side of the bed a lot. She has a red area about 4 inches square on one leg and swelling in both. She is on diuretics right now but the doctor wants to limit them because of the effect they have on her kidney function.

We have raised the foot of her bed, but she will slide her feet off the side of the bed during the night because it's not comfortable. She wears knee high support hose during most of the day. She shuffles instead of walking so not sure her little bit of walking is doing much good as exercise.

Even with all this her legs still remain swollen. She's been to the doctor twice in the past two weeks and she recommends just continuing what we are doing.

Even I can see it's not working very well. What else can I do???? My mom depends on me and 'my internet' to solve her medical problems...lol.

I'd really appreciate any helpful suggestions.

  1. Two things can help along with medication

Lymphatic massage can help redistribute some of the fluid into the blood, allowing for it to be filtered out by the kidneys

As well, pressure stockings can also help in a similar manner

  2. Jeez, she's 98.  Has the doctor said anything about reduced heart function due to age?  Would she be more comfortable with pillows under her legs and feet at night?  Can she shuffle to a recliner where she can sit and still have her legs elevated?  If you press on her leg with your index finger, does it leave an indention?
