Don't know how to read the blurb that came with it but got back at least $600 less than I thought I would get back. Any help out there to reading the blurb. In Australia.

  1. what does the blurb say??

if in doubt, ring the ATO (with your TFN and the blurb handy) and be prepared to be put on hold for ages

  2. You might be in the same situation as me - do you receive family tax benefit A? If centrelink has "overpaid" you (i use commas, as i was "overpaid" through no fault of my own - they made the mistake now I'm $600 worse off for it GRR...) they take out what you owe them from the lump sum child payment you receive at tax time which is the $600. If you owe them more than $600, you will receive a bill, so hopefully you wont!! I still owed them $10.30 apparently, but they oh so generously waived it - i was shocked too

If this doesn't apply to you, call the ATO - they're number will be on you notice of assessment that you received with your cheque. Best of luck!

  3. Not sure what you mean by 'blurb' but once I got heaps less than I thought I would and it was because I was receiving Centrelink payments in the same financial year that I earned money from working. Centrelink don't tax payments, and no tax is owed if you don't earn money from working in the same year, BUT if you do then you have to pay tax for the years Centrelink payments which get's taken out of your tax return. Er, hope that made some sense and answers your question : )

  4. The ATO assessment notice tells you where they made the necessary adjustment. Are you a member of a private health fund? if not then the ATO would have added a levy of 1.5% of your income to your tax amount. This indicates to me that your taxable income was $ 40,000.00.
