I live in Pennsylvania. I never drive that car but my friend needed a ride at night. So i picked him up and driving and the guy in front of my suddenly stopped and i hit him from the back. I didn't hit him that hard i put a bump on his rear bumper. And he totally agreed that we could settle it outside. I told him that i would pay him for his damages. And he calls me and tells me that he is putting his car in garage and wants a check for $6000. What should i do?

  1. Well, you drove illegally, so, if you want it to stay out of court and not get charged, you should pay the $6000.

Obviously if there is only a small amount of damage to the car, it shouldnt cost $6000 to repair, unless it was a classic or rare car. Perhaps you creased the floor and there is a lot of work that needs to be done under the car.

Perhaps you should ask to see a quote, or ask the guy to take his car to panel shop you know, so that you can get a fair quote.

Keep in mind that the guy can just phone the police, have you arrested and charged for not carrying insurance, and you may lose your licence.

    Be careful how you tread.

  2. Body repairs can be expensive so this may be reasonable.  You should ask to see the written price quote from the repair shop.  That way you know you are paying for the repairs. Get insurance before you drive.   If you are an insured driver on other cars, it may cover you on this car.  Doesn't hurt to ask your insurance company.  Just make sure they know you are asking and not filing a claim.

    Just my 2 cents.

  3. i wouldnt give him a check for anything, i would get the bill from the garage and pay them directly otherwise he could take you for all you got

  4. although i hate people who don't drive with insurance unless its a law in your state u cant be arrested or given a ticket for driving without insurance.

i wouldn't write him a check for anything, i would try and go with him to  different body shop and get an estimate. cause if what your saying is true his check should be  $5500 less. he can go to the police and try and make a report but but at this point its just a civil matter so he can sue you and h**l probably win. but it more then likely me much less then $6000.

  5. You should pay him, obviously.

You were driving illegally, and he gave you the chance to settle out of court. He has every right to take you for everything you're worth.

The cheapest solution, is just to pay what you owe him.

  6. Six thousand dollars buys an awful lot of body work, even these days. Don't pay anything without a written estimate. Is his car even worth $6000? Check out the book value on a site like NADA.

OF course, it's altogether possible that the damage really is in the $6000 range. If you don't have the money, you may want to offer to pay his deductible if he collects from his own insurance. His insurance company will try to collect from you for the full amount, but this will buy you some time and the insurance company may be willing to settle for less than 100% if you cooperate with them.
