Question:

Got married - IRS Filing for 2008

I got married this year. I changed my name at work and was told this is going to cause me IRS issues because my social security card name does not match (I hyphenated my maiden-married name) and I will not be able to file my taxes. My sister got married in 2002 and did not change the name on her social security card until this year. She had no issues with the name discrepancy.

I live in NYC. I had trouble getting a social security card because I didn't have picture ID, I couldn't get a picture ID without the social security card. I've since gotten a passport to fix the problem. Will I need to change the name on the passport before I try to apply for a name change on the social security card or is my marriage license sufficient?

It would be easier I guess if these agencies actually communicated lol, it seems one doesn't know the rules of the other...

Any advice or direction with this is so appreciated!!!

  1. Get your name changed on your social security number. Contact SS Administration.

  2. You need to change (or not change) everything so that it matches - Social Security, driver license, employment, passport, etc.  Keeping two different names on different records will cause problems.  And you have to do it - these agencies do not communicate.

  3. Use whatever name appears on your social security card and everything is fine. Not everyone changes their names when they marry.

  4. It doesn't matter what name you use at work, but when you file your tax return, use the same name that's on your latest social security card.  It's OK if that doesn't match your W-2.

  5. Contact social security and let them know about the name change.
