Got my first debit card, but how do I make purchases?

Silly question. But how do you do it when you put it through the reader?

Be detailed if you can. :P

On most, the side with the "stripe" goes towards the numbers.

Most machines have a little icon to tell you which way to do it.

Swipe it, and follow the directions.

Most places will allow you to use your debit card as a credit card or a debit card... if you use your debit card as a credit card, you will not be charged any fees to use your card to make purchases... (the store will actually pay the fee)

if you select debit,,, you will have to enter your pin number instead of signing the receipt or screen.... some stores will charge you an "ATM" fee or debit card fee to withdraw money.... you will also be able to take extra cash out at the register and it will work like an ATM.

u give it to the cashier and u smile!!!   they will do it for u!!!  al u do is enter the pin!!!

You dont have to do anything, just give it to the clerk. She will take care of it for you.

~~No such thing as silly questions!  Each reader will have  a picture. of which way the card has to face to slide it through. Put the card in the direction shown, and slide through quickly. Then the screen  will  tell you too put in the pin number, which you do, then push enter. Some machines ask you if you want cash back, the some ask you to okay the total. Each machine always seems different.  My bank, Bank of America requires you to use the card at the bank's ATM on your first time. You may need to do that before it will work at a store.~~
