I want to know if I upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop to Server Edition, will it delete any of my files, settings, etc. I have in the Desktop Edition? I'm upgrading to Server, so I can run Samba for our home network. One node has Wiin XP Home SP2 and I'm running a mlti-boot partition with Ubuntu and Win XP Pro SP2.

  1. It's not an "upgrade" or "downgrade." They are simply different editions. Having the server version is not necessary for Samba (or anything else, really). You should be able to install Samba easily from your package manager. The difference between the two is that the Server does not have a GUI by default.
