Hey guys,

My little sisters betta recently died. The betta was living in my 2.5 gallon minibow which was put away for a month or so. But last friday was her birthday and we decided to get the minibow out again and I told her that we are getting you a new betta. She is so excited and we will get the new betta tomorrow. Ok so the tank came with the big bulky tetra whisper filter that I absolutely hate because it takes up like half the tank! I am going to take it out and just have no filtration and do an 80% water change each week. I will have an air pump though. The tank came with a betta divider which I wish to use because My sister wants a female betta and I want a male. would it be ok?

  1. The poor bettas wouldn't have enough room!  Definaitly don't try to squeeze two fish in that tank!

  2. NOOOO sorry to say this, but each betta needs a 5gallon heated, filtered tank..... 2.5 is to small for one to be happy healthy and live a full life, let alone 2!! please, trash the 2.5 it isnt good for any fish and get a proper tank!! =]

  3. No, you don't need a filter.

But the air pump is a good idea. If you have the triangular tank, i have the same exact one, it came with a divider.

I had two male bettas, with the divider in.

They lived for about 2 years.

It'll be fine, i had no pump, but i did have an air pump.

    (same exact situation)

Do a 25% water change everyother week, feed them every other day.

Like others said, changing more than 25% of the water could hurt the bacteria levels.

    Other wise, goodluck!

And, happy birthday to your sister!!

  4. only for one betta 2 may be pushing it

and they need heaters as they are tropical fish set to about 23c

also 80% does not leave much good bacteria so i would get a smaller filter

    need help

    read my profile

    good luck

  5. I would definitely suggest buying another filter. Small filters for a tank that size are only a few dollars. It would be much better if you didn't use the divider and just got one fish. Maybe you and your sister will find one betta you both like. (But if this is supposed to be her birthday present, let her choose the fish.)

Wow, thumbs down for everybody! What gives?

  6. You're fine going with the 80% water changes weekly and no filter. You also don't need an air pump, because bettas breathe air. I would recommend getting another container for a second betta, because it's stressful to them to have to stare at another betta 24/7, even if it's the opposite s*x. Most breeders will keep their bettas "carded", or separated from view from others with a piece of cardboard.

A gallon container should be fine, especially if you put in a wad of java moss, which they LOVE.

  7. Sure,it`ll be fine.

  8. first of all there is no point in having a filter, the filters ranked for those small tanks are usually underpowered and dont do much (dont catch particles). Also, a tank that small wouldnt be able to sustain a nitrogen cycle so it is not that much more helpfull. My suggestin is that you only get one betta, two of them will produce much more waste and you have no filter now. You will have to do 100% weekly wanter changes or 50% water changes twice a week (if you find a way to also remove the debri). I think you should get some live plants to help with water quality since you will have no filter. I have figured that using aged water also helps (by natural or artificial means). 9. Firstly never do more then a 20% to 25% water change each week, secondly. I would say that there is room for one betta in there at best, definitely don't try and squeeze 2 in there.
