  1. You must report this income on your tax return. If you don't do it you will certainly get into trouble.

If you are not a regular employee, then you are self employed or independent contractor.

You must file tax return, if your self employed income exceeds $400. Your income is subject to SE tax at 15.3%.

  2. One of three things will likely happen.

    1.  You will be asked to fill out a W-4 so your tax liability can be taken out of your check.

    2.  You will be asked to fill out a W-9 so the people that you are working for will issue you a 1099.

    3.  Nothing will happen and you will need to report the income and related deductions yourself.

The government will only find out if you get audited.  They will look at your banking activity and see that you either deposited the money in your account or cashed a check against your bank account.  In these cases, they will want an explanation of where you got the money.  If you can't give them a good explanation, they will treat the money as income.

  3. The people who paid you will report it and your tax return better match all the forms the IRS has.
