Hi i've been working out for 4 1/2 months, then i stopped working out for two weeks because i was moving. Then today i started working out again and i realized i got so much weaker!

This always happens when i stop working out for more than a week. I'm not saying i do this alot. I only did it twice in the 4 1/2months and i didn't even count it. so it's 5months.

WHat's the reason for this? and how can i stop it? am i doing something wrong?

Thanks

  1. I griped about not being able to lift the same after surgery and PT. I was told that muscles contract after injury and it would be along time, maybe years before I could do everything.

I think lack of use shortens ones ability. The pain from use is 2 days. I uses every thing, every other day.

  2. not sure what you mean by "working out" - but i'll assume you mean lifting weights.. in that case, you might walk in after time off and be out of the rythm, but, after 1 full week back, you should be able to pick up right where you left off.  You don't lose all your muscle gains in 2 weeks.

as a rule of thumb, keep on lifting and when you have time off, just make sure you are eating enough calories to maintain the muscle mass you've built, but not over eating as to gain excess fat.

the body adapts, so your lack of strength at the gym is just an idication that your body got out of the habit..

    get back and don't quit

  3. Well your doing excersise and your bodys in such good shape and then BOOM, you stop. your body can't handle that if its use to excersise. When you stop its just like, what? And then its like ok well I guess thats over lets start taking that muscle I built and use it for energy. And there you go your muscles get weaker. And when you start of course its not gunna be the same because your weaker. So just get back on track and try not to stop again. Hope I helped! =)

  4. your muscles are always either getting stronger or weaker, never staying the same. you will need to work out at least twice a week to maintain your strength, and more than that to actually build strength

  5. That's not at all abnormal to lose some strength when taknig a break.  Your muscles simply are out of condition for lifting - typically it takes me about as long in weeks to regain what I lost.  The longer you've been a consistent athlete he easier it is to recover from breaks.

One way to reduce loss is to stay consistent with diet, try to keep protein and fat intake higher, slowly reduce carb levels the longer you're on break.  And most importantly, try to keep your diet as clean as possible.

    Edit:

No, you didn't lose muscle, it's not that easy to lose lean muscle tissue.  Just be patient, consistent, and make sure your diet is adequate and you're eating the right kinds of foods.  In a couple weeks you'll be back to where you are.  Look at it this way, many pro bodybuilders take time off due to injury, life events, etc, and always manage to make it back.  That's one reason why it's so important to set short and long term goals.
