Question:

Got the game ball???

Hi, I need some help.

I'm from England and we don't really (if at all) have base ball over here. I know nothing about baseball as a result but keep hearing on American programmes the phrase "He got the game ball".

What does this mean? Sorry to sound stupid but this game is so important to so many Americans and I would love to be able to understand it a bit better. (Which wouldn't be hard as all I know is there's a bowler, batter and some stops people run around)!

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

  1. the game ball is usually given to the player of the game as in the player who played the best in that game.or it could also be if a fan catches a homerun or foul ball.

oh yeah and not to sound rude but we call it a pitcher instead of a bowler.

  2. Sometimes in sports (any sport really), after a big win, a team will give the game ball to a player who had a great day and was a big help to the winning effort of the team. The idea is that it publicly congratulates the player for his/her performance and they get to keep the ball as a souvenir to remember how great it felt to win a big game.\.

In Major league baseball, they don't usually give a player a real ball but they use the term "getting the game ball" as a way of recognizing a player for a great performance that day. Typically this term is used to acknowledge whichever player on the winning team had the best performance for that day.

They don't really give anyone a ball because a typically game they use about 60-80 balls (once they are hit into the stands, the fans keep them and they get a new one). So there isn't one game ball per game like soccer. Plus, since baseball has 162 games per year, the good players would end up with so many balls they would be meaningless. I'm sure that there have been players who kept balls from big games or accomplishments. Often times if a player gets a milestone hit (like his 1,000th career base-hit or the base-hit that gives him a record) they will give the ball to the player as a souvenir.

  3. game ball is given to whoever played the best in that game, or made the biggest impact on that game.

say if they are losing in the 9th inning (theres 9 innings in a game, meaning each team geets 9 times to hit) and a batter hits a homerun (when the ball goes over the fence) to win the game, then they would probably get the game ball.

  4. it means like *HE* is the best player in the game

  5. game ball  is given to the best player of the day.

  6. The game ball is to represent that the player who got it was the clutch performer of the game.

  7. the game ball is given to the most outstanding player on the team but if u loseyour team dosent get a ball u gte to see your coach yell and scream that u sucked out there or he dosent say anything
