Got ticket for crossing street even though i made it in time

A few months ago, I was given a ticket by an officer for crossing a crosswalk. I started crossing when there were 8 seconds left, and the hand was flashing. I MADE IT IN TIME, but the officer followed behind and called us out. We were given a ticket, because we started crossing too late. He said that you can only cross when the "man walking" sign appears, which lasted only 1 second.

As stupid as that sounds, I checked online and it is technically illegal. The ticket was labeled as jaywalking, and I have to PAY $123. I want to appeal and would like to know if there's anyway I could win this case. This officer obviously targeted our group, because another group of people actually jaywalked right after and the officer ignored them. Also, this happened on a college campus, and people jaywalk all the time. Why catch students who break this kind of law instead of students who actually jaywalk? Anyways, is there anyway I can repeal this ticket?

Appear before the judge, you do have that right.  If the officer appears, it's your word against his (and you may have witnesses), if he doesn't appear, you win.  BUT, if you loose, it's $123. plus court costs.  It's a flip of the coin on that one.  I think you may get it though, especially if you explain like you did then say you went online and looked it up.

Sure, appeal it. You may get the fine reduced. Often the fine will be reduced if you just show up. But don't take the line that you were targetted. Tell the judge that you were out of the crosswalk in time, and that you did not realize that you were in violation, but now that you DO, you will not do it again (though I'm sure you will).

Probably the only way you can get out of the ticket is if the cop was out of his jurisdiction at the time. You ought to get legal insurance. It can be really cheap, but it's gotten me out of sooooo man tickets, you wouldn't believe it.

Where in the USA were you? Just curious. I was in L.A. at the time and got stopped for the same exact thing. "Hand was flashing."

I dont know if there is anyway to repeal the ticket but i think this is a dumb ticket... the officer must of had nothing to do at the time lol

You can only walk when the signal is the little white man. The hand is flashing to stop more people from starting across the street and give time for those who haven't crossed the street to finish.

You were jay-walking, pay the ticket and don't whine.

If you entered when the "Don't Walk" was flashing, it is illegal.

The fact you made it in time will not be considered, nor will the fact someone else did it and did not get a citation.

Just because somebody breaks the law, that does not give you permission to break the law also.

This is deeper than a court matter. This is a legislative matter that should be taken all the way to your state's capital.
