  1. I think you maybe answered your own question. ;)

Shimano Flightdeck is probably  the best bike computer in that price range.  I've never owned one, but I test rode one, and it's pretty cool, it tells you what gear combo you are in.  It also gives the basics.  Just make sure  your shifters are  flight deck compatible, or it's somewhat of  a waste.

Otherwise, I got by for years with the cheapo $10 ones that give you your speed, distance, clock, etc.   The very basics.

I upgraded to a Cateye Astrale-8, after a while, which is a pretty good computer.  It tracks pedal cadence as well as the basics.  The screen is also pretty big, so you can show more information, such as speed and cadence at the same time.  Just make sure the computer unit is snapped into the holder because I was out on a ride and it bounced right off my handlebars.  I don't think I'd snapped it good  enough.  It kinda smashed  it a little, but it still works.  I only paid like $20 for it.

A year ago, I dropped $250 and got a Garmin Edge 305.  It's a lot of money, but it's got everything I could ever want and more.  It uses GPS to track my routes, which I can then download onto my laptop and keep a journal of my rides as well as generate charts & graphs of speed, workouts, or anything really.  It also tracks altitude, heart rate, pedal cadence, as well as the basics.  I love my 305, but I did  have to drop a wad of cash.

  2. Your best bet is going to be getting a wireless computer. A flightdeck is only for Shimano road. A good wireless is going to be more than $40, but you'll save in the long-run: as wires tend to get ripped-off when doing FR/DH.
