Question:

Gov't assistant question for those who have experience- going to college?

We qualify for insurance for our son, but I haven't qualified for welfare because of our income. Rediculously enough you can only make like $200 a month! But I am about to start graduate school in August. I will have school loans but no income. Does this make me eligible for temporary gov't assistance since I don't have an income or does the loan money count?

  1. According to the person I talked to, student loans do not count as income regardless of where they end up.  Just the same as federal grant money for college cannot be counted as income- because you are getting whatever is leftover after paying for school.

Besides, this is a one-time lump payment normally and it cannot count as your income.

I would say if you are not working at all, then you would qualify.  Explain that you are in graduate school and that you aren't working.

If all else fails and you are still wondering, call the assistance office.  However, there are some government workers that would consider this an atrocity trying to make a fraudulent claim against the state.  But when I had to get assistance a few years ago while I was still in school, my caseworker told me to skip over that line.  Because it really doesn't count as income.

That being said, my mother used to work in the financial aid department of a college and told people on a regular basis that loans didn't count towards income- so you decide what to believe.

  2. school loans to pay for what?? School or to help you with bills?? Because if it helps with bills, and doesnt go towards school, it will count as income.

  3. The idea is to finish college, then have babies.

    You got it backwards.
