  1. It is a parliamentary system. The parliament consists of two chambers. The lower chamber is called the House of Representatives. The upper house is called the House of Councilors. Both bodies have their members directly elected by the people. The Judicial Branch is headed up by the Supreme Court.

Instead of States they have Prefectures. There are forty seven of those. Each of them has a prefectural assembly, similar to a legislature in the U.S., except that each prefectural assembly is unicameral, like the state legislature of Nebraska. In addition, two major cities have an elected governor and their own assembly. Those are Tokyo and Osaka.

The current prime minister is Yasuo Fukuda. He is the son of a former prime minister and is the first person in the history of post-war Japan to serve as prime minister, having been  the son of a former prime minister. Sort of like the situation between President Bush the Elder and Bush the Younger in the U.S.
