Question:

Government assistance for struggling single parents?

I asked this same question before and everyone was rude to me. Is there anything out there specifically for single parents that are struggling to help them out? I'd appreciate people not to criticize me like they did last time I asked this question. Thanks.

  1. I dont mean this as criticism... I mean this as the truth.

Support your family.  Find ways to make more money.  May I suggest going to your local state government career agency and they can help you find a better job.  It is not the governments job to take care of you or your children.  Thats your duty.

I sure hope you are sitting at a library asking this question because I dont see how you can afford internet access if you cant afford your family.

  2. Valerie B: Wow honey. You must be ignorant.

..."Try to find ways to make more money"...

It's not that simple sugar. Especaily for a single mom- which I can bet you aren't one. It's a constant struggle when you are a single parent.

The girl who asked the question specifically asked people not to critisize her.. yet you call your critisizm "truth". You must be young. I'm 42 and I've lived the life of a single mom and most of us need a little government assisstance to SURVIVE. We are brave women. Don't put us down or judge us. THANKS HON.

As for the question: It varies state to state... My sugestion is to talk to other single moms in your area! Good luck hon.

  3. To the other lady that responded to her question: She's not asking for the government to take care of her children. It's a common misconception that people seeking government assistance are lazy. You don't know her situation. Single parents have it tough these days, even when they work full time. It's not easy raising a child without the father there for support. Have a little compassion.

Also, the government created programs such as food stamps and WIC and section 8 to help people that need it. (Such as single parents) And there is nothing wrong with that! Why should you have to put people down just because they are less fortunate? You don't know her situation. Maybe her spouse died, or she is a teenage parent.

Also, a better job often means more schooling, and more schooling means less money because of less time to work. It's not easy being a single parent, especaily if you don't have a college degree or a trade.

And also, saying that she better be at a library? Why do you have to be so harsh? I grew up with a single parent and he was extremely hard working but sometimes they need a little bit of help.

    I feel for you girl!

  4. Contact your local Department of Human services office and find out what you need to do to apply. They can help with food stamps, free daycare, nutrition programs like WIC, sometimes utility bill assistance and health insurance for your child, cash benefits called TANF for non working parents, your child's school will have information about free or reduced school lunches.  You might look into a Headstart program in the area as well that will offer tons of resources for you.

Contact the local State Health Department and the local elementary school counselor as well, they often have parental support programs for single moms... they are named differently depending on the location... Families First, Parent University, etc.

You might also call Legal Aid if you aren't getting child support.
