if congress were given the power to choose the pres, then limiting the term of office to a singe, long term would be a way to protect the pres from being manipulated by congress in order to get reelected. this is why the framers also decided that congress could neither increase nor decrease the pres's salary once in office

i don't see how the salary connects to the 1st sentence! just keep it simple 'cause i don't like long paragraphs. 5 sentences at most (:

  1. Here's how salary connects........

........if someone is pulling your pursestrings, one way or another, it might influence your decision making process.

Congress has the power to choose the President and Vice President only in the event that the electoral college fails to do so.

The U.S. Congress has two roles to perform in the case of a contested presidential election: (1) to officially count the ballots and announce the results of the Electoral College votes for President and Vice President, and (2) to elect the President and Vice President if the Electoral College fails to do so.

The House has elected a President twice. In 1801, it elected Thomas Jefferson, after 36 rounds of balloting. In 1825, it elected John Quincy Adams, after one round of balloting.

The Senate has elected one vice president in U.S. history. It elected Richard Mentor Johnson to be Vice President in 1837. He was President Martin Van Buren's Vice President.

  2. congress isn't given the power to change the president's paycheck so they don't have too much of an ability to manipulate the president.

the two sentences are related in that they show two different aspects where congress could manipulate the president but aren't able to.

  3. I guess what the author of the question means is that if Congress were able to change the Pres' salary, then Congress would have influence over the Pres to get him/her to do what Congress wanted in return for a higher salary.
