Government interference should be minimal in Sri Lanka team selection, says Haroon Lorgat – Cricket News Update
The former International Cricket Council Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat, in his report on Sri Lanka Cricket review as a special advisor, recommended the Sri Lankan government to cut down their interference in the selection process of the team.
The news came after Lorgat submitted a 10-page report to Sri Lanka Cricket on the in-depth analysis of the sport in the country, interviewing different stakeholders, including the media, former and current players, SLC staff, members of the board & the representatives
from clubs.
The SLC appointed Lorgat as a special advisor earlier, in July this year, to help them improve the administration of Cricket across the country and redesign its domestic structure.
Lorgat headed the ICC for four years before leaving the responsibility and thereafter was appointed by the SLC till the end of October 2012. In his analysis of the situation, the expert raised numerous issues, which included poor reputation, weak financial
position and administration, lack of organisational structure, need for transparency and most of all, the government’s involvement in the selection process of the team.
The need for SLC to ask for his assistance rose when it fell under a debt of US$ 70 million after the construction of two new cricket stadiums and renovation of one prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. Praising the SLC in their efforts earlier in August,
the former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Chief believed that the board was now in better control of their financial position, but much work still needed to be done.
The report was submitted to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nishantha-Ranatunga-c79713, the SLC secretary, who believes that now it is the responsibility of the stakeholders to work on the recommendations and implement them.
"From my personal point of view, I feel all these recommendations need to be addressed by the stakeholders, the improvements need to sit along with the stakeholders, and they need to come up with strategies to overcome it," said Ranatunga.
Further adding, the secretary felt, "The other option is to get an independent committee to come and look at this and come up with a solution."
Lorgat also advised the decentralization of List A and first-class cricket from Colombo to better meet the major re-structuring ends of domestic cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
