As this Labour Government gained power on a 'sleaze' campaign what 'sleaze' things can you recall, over the past 12 yrs, have this Government been accused of or associated with.

For example:

Cash for honours

Dodgy fund donations,

Prescott's fancy piece

Iraq mis-information

Deal for votes (42 day detention)

etc.,

  1. i take it your from jolly old ..

I'd love to hear more details.

sounds like you have some of the same problems

    we do.

wasn't tony Blair a pretend labor guy?

hope you can get your elections to be based on the real issues and a few facts.!

we are fighting so much right wing propaganda over here

you'd think the KGB was consulting.!

we have had union corruption here in the past too.

I'm afraid power & money  COMBINED left Unaccountable USUALLY equals corruption no matter the intial intent.

EVEN THE POLICE NEED an IA dept.

  2. To be honest, I think they're all as bad as each other. No matter which party would be in power, there'd be stuff coming out of the wood work....

  3. Well, the thing that springs to mind immediately is their expenses - basically, the public have now realised exactly how much money they are taking, second homes, £400 for food, dodgy donations.  Wendy Alexander had to step down today as leader of the Scottish Labour Government because of this very reason.  It's not going down too well with the public given that most of us are struggling whilst, we pay for them to live like kings.

  4. Government Sleeze?  yes Democrats.   was that your question?

  5. Yes....and are you sure you wanted to use the word LABOUR?

  6. You know the old saying?

"Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Because we have allowed our elected representatives, MPs, do decide things for themselves, it's only natural that human nature will take over.

First we get greed and all the rest follows.

Look at it like this.  My MP [a London taxi driver by trade] got into parliament full of good ideas and wanting to help people and change things for the better - somewhat idealistic if you like and Socialist to the core - a Labour MP.

Once in the House of Commons, this is where all the temptations start - the bulging expenses account with no one bothering to check up on how many Harrods Hampers that was supposed to be etc.

It does not take very long for a new MP to be spinning out of control as it were, surrounded by all the goodies he/she could ever want and all on what seems like an endless expenses account and no one checking up.

I rather go along with what Oscar Wilde once said, "I can resist everything except temptation".

Our MPs are from amongst us - they are our people.  So let's not go in there with a blunderbus.  Instead, let's put in place some accountability.  If receipts are offered up and properly checked by an accounts department or committee, they can decide whether or not the account will cover the cost of whatever it was the MP had purchased or was planning to purchase.

One MP I read about, the shameless swindler, was spending £25,000 a year on postage.  No MP gets that much mail to answer.  So I suspect he was running a mail order business on the side from his MPs office in the House of Commons - all at our expense.

    Ghastly man.
