Swansea City midfielder, Mark Gower revealed that he was pleased to make it into the starting eleven for the first time in 2012 against Manchester United on Sunday, despite seeing his side go down 2-0 at Old Trafford.
The English International came in for Leon Britton, who was ruled out of the game due to a knee injury. He played in the entire first half for the Swans and was substituted during the halftime break. He last started for the Welsh side against Tottenham Hotspur
in a league game at the Liberty Stadium on the 31st of December.
He told the club’s official website, “I hadn't started since the Spurs game as the lads have done well. It's been hard because I want to be out on the pitch playing.”
The 33-year old midfielder arrived at the Liberty Stadium in the 2008/2009 season, after completing his contract with Southend. He has since represented the Welsh club in 109 games and scored 3 goals during this period.
The game against Manchester United was only his seventh appearance this season in all competitions.
However, Gower revealed that he went into the game against the Red Devils mentally prepared, and mentioned that the Swans were wary of the fact that the hosts will come out blazing, in a bid to improve their goal difference, after Manchester City had beaten
Newcastle early on in the same day.
“With Manchester City winning earlier in the day I think United knew if they could get a few early goals then they could cut the gap at the top.” He added.
Even though United cruised to a comfortable win against the Swans on the day, Gower was keen on pulling out the positives out of the game, and felt that his side could have produced a much better display, had they converted from their chances.
He remarked, “I thought we equipped ourselves quite well…I thought Gylfi [Sigurdsson] got behind the midfield a few times in the first half but maybe we just didn't have the killer touch against a defence as good as Manchester United's.”
However, he expected a better show from the Swans in their final game of the season against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 on Sunday.
