  1. This question cannot be answered without knowing what your school considers a perfect GPA.  In other words, what's the highest possible GPA at your school?  If it's 78, then you have a 4.0!  If it's 156, then you have a 2.0.  But my guess is that its going to be a "nice" number like 100 or something like that.

When you do find out that number, simply divide 78 by it, then multiply by 4 to get your new GPA.

  2. You can't quite do what math guy above said - if your GPA is 78 out of 100, then having a 50 out of 100 would give you 50/100 * 4.0 = 2.0 which means a C average - but 50 is definitely failing.  You can't directly convert an overall percentage to a GPA on a 4.0 scale.

    Take each class, convert the number grade to a letter grade based on your school's system, change the number grade to the 4.0 system (A = A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F= 0.0), multiply it by the number of credits the class was worth (1 if you don't know), add them all up, and divide by the total number of credits.  That's your offical GPA.
