Question:

Grab bars for bathtub installations?

I'm in the process of re-building my bathroom. But I would like to know what specific details I need to know about installing grab bars for the dis-abled. Do I instal them anchored to some 2x4's or 2x6's between the studs, or do they just go into drywall anchors? I assume there has to be some substantial 'meat' for them to anchor to to be safely pulled on. I'm going to tile the whole tub/shower area and use that special mold/mildew resistant drywall for to mount the tile.

Thank you inn advance.

(P.S., I live in the state of Missouri, and this is a private home, NOT a public place, so I don't know if ADA guidelines have to be strictly adhered to or not.)

  1. When building a bathroom, before installing the dry wall, you will want to install 2x6 blocks between the studs between 30 and 36" off the ground to attach the grab bars. There are other ways of installing grab bars, including special wall anchors, installing the bars only between studs, etc, but the most superior way of doing it is to have blocking installed in the way. The height recommendation for grab bars is strictly based on the ADAAG, and I always tell people to install the bars at the height they need them. If they need a bar at 20" or 40", then that is where they need to put the blocking.

BTW, the ADAAG does not apply to private single family homes. However it is useful in determining basic accessibility needs.

The dry wall anchors specifically for grab bars are made by MOEN. We have used them in installations with out problem, and they are rated to support 1500 pounds static force on 5/8 drywall, which is more than enough for most people. T hey are not cheap though.

  2. definately put 2 x6 or 2x 8 's in the wall where you want the grab bars . usually a shorter one 18-24 " right at the entrance of the shower on the vertical and than usually longer one 36" horitzontal  or a 45 degree angle along the back wall . alot of showers  have hand held showers on a rod , try to lay out where all that is going so the hose to that doesn't get in the way of the grab bars . laying everythign out in the shower is important if it for ederly or handicaped people ,  keep in mind that they might be sitting and than can actually grab hold of the things they need  .good luck

  3. Decide where you wish to locate them and install 2x6's for securing the rails into. Drywall will not hold them if someone should slip, fall and grab onto them. Since you are doing it while remodeling, do it correctly.

  4. Yes 2by6 or 2by 8's will work they have to be mounted between the studs. For minor railing were there is not goint to be a substaintial amount of weight you can use 3/4 plywood Good Luck
