Grace has16 jelly beans in her pocket. 8 red, 4 green, and 4 blue.?

what is the min. # of beans she must take out of her pocket to

ensure that she has one of each color? i know the ans., but i don't know how it was arrived at. can someone help (explain)?

The worse case situation would be that you have taken out 12 jelly beans and 8 are red and 4 are blue (or green).  So you would need to draw out one more to make sure that you got one of each.

That would be 13 jelly beans.
