Grade 2 winner Running Stag dies at a stud farm in South Korea at age 18
The 18-year-old Running Stag finally met his fate, as he died at a stud in South Korea. Over the course of his long career, the runner saw his fair share of success and collected a number of victories.
It was reported that he had been ill for some time and finally passed away. Bred in Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky, the runner never claimed a victory in the Grade 1 category, but did pretty well in the Grade 2 category.
The son of Cozzene, out of French bred mare Fruhlingstag, raced in 40 starts over the course of his career and held a record of 7-11-2 and earnings worth $1,663,227.
Whelped in 1994, he claimed the first victory of his career in the Maiden Weight For Age in 1997 as a three-year-old.
As a five-year-old, the runner claimed the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap, and went on to win the Grade 2 Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap in the same campaign.
He finished fourth in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes, participated in the Grade 1 Dubai World Cup and ended up in seventh place.
In 2000, the Philip Mitchell trained horse triumphed in the Grade 2 Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs where he defeated, Out Of Mind, with jockey John Velazquez on his back.
Owned by Shane J. Sellers, the runner’s career officially ended when he finished sixth in the Grade 1 Arlington Million Stakes in August, 2000.
At the international level, Running Stag won the Grade 3 Prix Gontaut-Biron, and finished second in the Grade 3 Hong Kong Cup. He was initially owned by Khalid Abdullah, but later raced for Richard Cohen.
Stunning Stag is one of the runners sired by Running Stag and he seems to be quite the success story.
In 35 starts, he holds a record of 11-9-6 and has earnings worth $964,701. He won the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes at Woodbine, finished third in the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes and as a runner-up in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes.
The highlight of his career was his victory in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes at Woodbine in November, 2010.
