Grade 7 science help PLEASE!!!!!?

According to scientific theory, the same materials that absorb radiant energy well shouls also radiate energy well. Suppose you have pairs of similar objectys with different surfaces, as listed below. You heat them to the same high temperature. Which type of surface radiates energy better and thus cools down more quickly?

A) a light colored surface or a dark one

B)a dull surface of a shiny surface

i am sort of confused by this queestion... if it is dark wouldnt it absorb it more...but also hold on to it?????

please help mee!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. I think so your theory is wrong according to me its like that black surfaces absorb more and white surfaces reflect more.

    Consider this i m taking the eg. Of sunlight and colours of objects.

    A white object appears white because it reflects all the colours {and also heat thats why white or light objects appear cooler)

    similarly black object appears black because it absorbs all the colours{and also heat ie why black surfaces appear hotter}

    i think so i have helped you in understanding it. Also shiner is the surface more is its reflecting power and less absorbing power.


  2. yep. Dark colours absorb light/heat (which is why they're dark) & light colours reflect (which is why they're light), so the more light/heat an object reflects, the faster it cools down.

    The same applies to the dull/shiny one. The shinier a surface the more it reflects.

  3. I would know the answer to this question if it was light related... I assume that it would be a dark, dull surface if that theory is true.

  4. ok. the best absober and emitter of radiation is general, whether it be heat or light, would be dull, dark surfaces. this is why in a solar panel the heating pipes are black and dull.

    the best reflectors of radiation would be birhgt, shiny surfaces. this is why when a person is injured they're given a shiny silver blanket to keep them warm.

  5. A light coloured shirt is light colored because it reflects more light than a dark shirt. So it radiates energy (light) better than the dark shirt.

    A shiny surface reflects much more light than a dull surface obviously, so it radiates energy better.

  6. A light coloured surface cools down more quickly, think of a sidewalk compared to the hot dark pavement road.

  8. The question states that materials that absorb radiant energy also radiate energy well.  Whether that is true or not it is the assumption you must use to make your prediction.

    A)  Since a light (white) material reflect well and dark (black) materials absorb heat/light well, the dark material will radiate the energy better and thus cool down more quickly.

    B)  Dull surfaces absorb the radiant energy well and shiny surfaces reflect the energy.  Therefore, based on the theory above, the dull surface will cool down more quickly.

    I am assuming the question is not about what actually happens but is making you look at a theory and make a prediction (form a hypothesis) that can be tested.

    and will cool down quicker not the shiny and light colored one.....so uh....yea

    im in 6th grade AP

    u should know this....DUH darker colors absorb and radiate bettr than lighter ones...(kindergarten)lol
