I'm a Freshman this year in high school when it starts on August 28. I was wondering why exactly was my grade 8 teacher always trying to scare us about high school and the way she says it is annoying because instead of saying high school she says The high school is very hard or and some other stuff when she came from teaching at a high school.

  1. As an educator myself, I find scaring kids highly unprofessional.  That said, the only reason I could find that she would want to scare you is to get you to take High School seriously.  Don't be afraid, High School is a vast arena of opportunity!  Find things that interest you like clubs and other activities. In no time you will be making friends!  Some high schools even have college courses that allow you to jump start your career or help you to select and try out fields of interest to you.  Don't worry too much and definitely don't be afraid, high school is way better than middle school.  You have more choices :)

    Best of luck!

  2. Teachers do this to raise your level of concern.  They feel that you will pay better attention to the things you're going to need to know to get through high school.

  3. I don't know, but it's not unusual for a teacher to give the kids a heads up about the next grade level.  She is probably referring to the high school which the eight graders of your school typically attend.  Maybe it has a reputation for being harder?  I don't know.  I teach high school.  It's true that it can seem overwhelming at first, especially if it's a large high school.  But, in the end, I've found that high school is often, well, too easy.  That's at least the case for public schools.  I'll be honest.  I remember thinking in the middle of my freshman year how much EASIER things were.  Maybe it's just because I hated 7th and 8th but liked my high school.  That was 30 years ago, and it doesn't seem like things have changed.  If anything, high school has gotten less challenging compared to years ago.  Many teachers, myself included, worry about this trend and work hard to keep the curriclum from getting too "Mickey Mouse" and watered down.  Maybe your teacher knows that there are a lot of teachers who feel the same way at the high school.

  4. i would say she could be telling the truth and scaring you a little bit to "put a little fire under your butt".
