Grade Level Writing Placement Test?

I am a high school special education teacher and am struggling to find a good resource to help determine my students' writing levels. For IEP documentation, it is important to know the students' present levels in order to create goals for them to work toward. Does anyone know of an easy to use writing assessment? We have used Brigance before, but it is not very accurate and can be unreliable. We are currently using our own system of marking mistakes on a writing prompt. This, however, is very subjective. Any suggestins or ideas? Thanks so much!
